A more interesting question is what happens to PRC citizens' data when they are traveling overseas? Does Apple have a special Great Firewall jumping VPN built in to their devices to protect the data of their global customers who travel in and out of China for work or pleasure? It might not be a global threat to route devices sold in China to servers that are backdoored by the Chinese government, but it might be a threat if devices sold in China taken overseas still connect to those servers, or if overseas devices inside China do the same.
