Came here to say this. Forgetting about the internationalization aspect, the real strength of the digital Yuan will be its ability to strengthen (slash 信息化) macro-economic policy. You could, for instance, issue a digital government stimulus check but require through code that it be spent in certain sectors. And of course, the real-time visibility into consumer and business spending habits will provide an enhanced barometer for the overall economy beyond traditional metrics.
Whatever it is, it's not nothing. China may not know where the space is heading but at least they know that they should be prepared for it. They are innovating here and we should take notice.
