When the USSR dissolved itself, Ukraine became an independent nation via treaty signed by Ukrainian and Russian leaders. Putin might hate that fact, but the treaty is legal and enforceable: Ukraine, including the eastern provinces and Crimea, are Ukrainian, are not part of Russia. There are no "takey-backies" in geopolitics.
