Most everything Trump does is for show, not results. This is no different.
Trump's supplementing of D.C.'s local police with federal troops and agents is legal, at least in the short term. I only question its sanity. Even if it cuts crime dramatically--and we don't know that yet--no city can possibly make that arrangement permanent. It's too costly to hire hundreds of "supercops" to walk around neighborhoods without doing any other police work. These guys don't answer 911 calls, write reports, testify in court, settle domestic disputes, haul drunks out of bars, or do the 1,000 other things everyday cops do. They walk and talk to people, period. That's not their fault, it's what they're told to do. But when they go home, criminals go back to work.
