There is a data war going on now; the side with the biggest data pool wins. China has been very sensitive about keeping Chinese consumer and bio data in China, while the US has been collecting consumer data since Google and FaceBook depend on it for creating user profiles, it is part of their business model.
Profiles are important because they are important to feed into machine learning models for AI; the biggest data set is more accurate. Right now, it looks like the US, or US companies (Google, FB) have bigger datasets. Except they have had success with China. Google has data until 2010, but that is largely out of date now. FB could never get into China even though they tried hard.
When it comes to biological data, it looks like China has been quietly collecting data from women all over the world through BGI: https://www.reuters.com/investigates/special-report/health-china-bgi-dna/
This is like a spy war being fought over data. Immensely interesting stuff. As usual, this is what people should be focusing on, but most don't see it, even though it is right in front of them.
