I agree on the "should I stay or should I go" decision. My guess is that neither side will enforce too strictly, but the US will pretty much look the other way if companies want to do business in China. That will have some social or market repercussions in the US, but not enough to dissuade the companies. Too many already derive a good share of profit from China. I agree on the environmental and aging issues, along with debt and a generally poor public feeling about China in the US and much of the west. Xi seems to have addressed directly the corruption issue - it cannot be really eradicated, given the nature of the system, but people are happy to see progress on that front. I don't think Mr. Xi can get China to a xiaokang state, regardless of what he proclaims. There are still - pick your number - 600 or 800 million Chinese who are not middle class. Whether many of them can ever get sort-of-middle class jobs is beside the point - I don't think many western businesses looking at China's size look too hard at the ability to raise all the boats much further. In any case, US markets are more saturated and greater regulation is in the offing, not less. Where do you want to go? These topics require far more discussion than can be done in these exchanges. I've always enjoyed your comments here, and hope we can do this more.
