So one type is externally imposed, the other is internally embraced/developed? I think your distinction is solid: it has always seemed to me that all politics are identity politics: if I identify as a republican/democrat, that informs my politics as much as if I were white or black, but your distinction makes what others mean when they say “identity politics” much more intelligible for me.
