People in general don’t realize that most of what anthropologists describe as “culture” is simply dross that people use to distinguish themselves as an in group from an out group, and it has no real empirical reality outside of social contexts, including ideas about gender. I agree that treating people as individuals is a good path that circumvents the problems that our culture imposes on those who don’t conform to cultural “norms” whether those norms are gender related or otherwise.
