Focus on Xi thoughts:
I feel like there are two elite groups, and one overarching circumstance. The groups are one, those (90%? 80%?) for whom the chauvinistic China greatness propaganda, and the posture it allows them to assume in their own lives and in their talk about the USA/West (they are obviously right and the USA is obviously not only wrong but self-evidently weak and stupid and worthy of contempt, ie all the negative emotions humans feel towards other tribes which makes us feel good and superior which everyone likes to feel of course), are intoxicating, and therefore support Xi wholeheartedly. And two, those whom secretly harbor more universal values (in opposition to tribalism), that is those who believe in fairness and justice and empathy and that Americans are also human beings for whom those values should be placed first, rather than the tribal instinct which is to self-justify by saying “of course I believe in fairness but we will have no fairness until you are beaten because you are intrinsically evil and nothing you do except submit could ever be fair to me,” which is to say tribalism is a fundamentally unfair point of view (it gives non members no chance, in opposition to universal values). However this group seems to be a small minority, and the overarching circumstance I see is that the fascist-like propaganda is so effective that it has completely consumed the country and I don’t see any path to cultivating any significant opposition to Xi. On the other hand, it’s a good reminder that the status quo won’t last forever, and that there are other ways China/the CCP could deal with the world than as a shrill, thuggish, demanding state.
And in fairness, Trumpism is little different to Xiism in my view, so thinking people in both the USA and China have much more in common than they do with their tribal fascist countrymen. USA patriotism properly understood must be rooted in the values of the declaration of independence, just as Chinese patriotism properly understood should be rooted in Confucian values and harmony among all living things.
