Bill: One more intervention from me this week. We have all been focused a lot lately on these "big picture", "big state" issues (what are China's economic prospects, what is the state of Sino-US relations, how is the Communist Party's longstanding program of interfering in the political and social affairs of other countries), and so on. And they are important. It seems a shame, though, that this focus has left less time to talk about the Communist Party's policies of repression, particularly as they affect those in Chinese society who are either vulnerable to majoritarian abuse (the Uyghurs, Tibetans, Christians, Muslims, the FLG) or those who advocate for the promotion of individual rights and freedoms (rights defenders, social activists and, in Hong Kong, former legislators and democracy activists). Perhaps you could tackle some of this in upcoming Sharp podcasts?
