I think that the statement from Putin was little more than theatre (pre-arranged in concert with Xi).

Does Xi "like" what he sees in Ukraine? Who knows, but we do know that at least a few foreign policy experts and others in China question the wisdom of Russia's invasion.

Whatever the case may be, however, Xi is probably not going to let Putin twist in the wind, because Xi likely worries that the collapse of Putin's regime might presage the collapse of his own (or, at the very least, signal that authoritarian leaders like Putin and Xi are not infallible--and nor are they "forever").
