We could put this argument in a longer historical view: the KMT, CCP and many Ch intellectual past and present think the common people 老百姓 cannot be trusted to act in an informed way. That was so with Sun Yat-Sen and with contemporary CCP elite. TW proves this is false. Han Chinese can engage and deliver on the kind of democracy we in the West accept, with all it sins and virtues. That is hugely, monumentally challenging to the party.
