Yes, "bread and circuses." I actually am skeptical any American state will ever secede. Plenty of people would think this would be an improvement over our authoritarian Status Quo. However, most citizens would be terrified of losing all of their government benefits and handouts (pensions, Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, food stamps, government jobs, etc). Plus, any new country probably wouldn't have a CDC or NIAID - and that would terrify most Americans!
