It's not realistic to ban it. China has made it very hard for people inside China not using VPNs to communicate on any other messaging services. So if overseas Chinese want to talk to their friends, relatives and business partners back home, they have to use WeChat. Many non-Chinese also face the same issues communicating with people on the Chinese mainland.
