I think the PRC would like to see a pro-Beijing president and Legislative Yuan in Taiwan whom it could lean on to push unification forward at the right time, and who would be willing to use lawfare to break the back of any large-scale protests and other resistance.
China does not want to invade Taiwan. It wants to use compliant local authorities to force its agenda through like it did in Hong Kong.
Keep in mind that it is still legal for the president, subject to the approval of the LY, to declare martial law in Taiwan per the ROC Constitution. Article 39.
