I have mentioned this before somewhere. When I was in Shenzhen in 2017, I spoke with a woman whose business it was/is to assist students in getting their visas to go abroad. I asked her, in her experience, what percentage of the parents she was working with were planning on following their child abroad. I was guessing maybe 20 percent. She said 50. And this in Shenzhen. Then again, I've heard it said that Shenzhen is a city premised on earning money quickly and then hightailing it elsewhere. It sort of reminds me of the Carpetbagger South. Admittedly, I still have fond memories of the Longhua district where I lived. A lot of young and large families, sometimes seeing upwards of 6, 2 parents and 4 children, on the ubiquitious scooters!
