Has anyone read Chen Te-Ping's "Land of Big Numbers"? I think she captures the Zeitgeist and pathos of contemporary China with great insight. The last story, Gubeikou Spirit, drives a stake through the heart of what's just beneath all the shiny objects and headlines. The character Cao Cao (Flying Machine) reminds me of XJP.
