I think the more pertinent and immediate question is why is the CCP's feet not being held to the fire for what is happening in Xinjiang and Tibet, and, well, most everywhere in China. As those in China will say, almost wistfully, the Covid policies have nothing to do with the pandemic, and everything to do with control. It's been a grand experiment for implementing ever more harsh or omnipresent surveillance. Indeed, Xi, being the good Leninist that he is, seems to be willing to crush not only the country, but the party itself, in an effort to grasp and hold onto as much power for himself as possible. He's his own black hole, with the personality and psychology to match. Hitler was said to have loved dogs and children. I don't know if Xi loves anything.
