I believe the feminist founders of these programs were intellectually dishonest from the outset. They prepared the course and program proposals to mislead curriculum committees into believing that the courses would conform to accepted standards within the academic community and abide by accepted practices. Once the programs and courses were in place, there were few mechanisms to hold them to what they proposed, and they banded together to fend off anyone who tried to shed light on what they were actually attempting. It had nothing to do with any "negative interaction" with men; it was purely a stratagem to gain money and power, and they were incredibly shrewd in carrying it out.
