I would add I've also lived in Taiwan, been there many times, and worked within U.S.-Taiwan relations. I have a great admiration for both Taiwan and it's people. I don't feel like it's unsafe at all. My and I think the Economist's point is to illicit a conversation by being somewhat hyperbolic. Definitely if anyplace is unsafe, especially for both people in Taiwan and Americans, it's the PRC, which even before the pandemic had a do not travel designation from the State Department. The risk of harassment or indefinite detention remains very real for any American in Mainland China.
