i see it as somewhat differently in that the real damage lies in the failure of the republic that placed the primacy of the rights of the individual above the state and the demos.

pure democracy is one of the nastiest and more irresistible forms of tyranny ever devised. it's just 3 wolves and a sheep voting about what's for dinner in which the oppressive instinct always has the backing of the mob.

you cannot base a system on presuming the "politicians will act well or be good people." they never will.

we must, to my mind, instead devise systems that keep these bad people from doing harm. no group can run a government this powerful well.

we must take this power away and reclaim the primacy of the rights of the individual.
