How real people in the real world wear them would, even if they otherwise worked, invalidate the whole thing all on its own. My family bought into the fear, and would only let me visit "masked and socially distant." OK, fine, I made an exception (last summer, not anymore) for them as we live thousands of miles apart and don't get to visit often. Within 1/2 hour of my arrival, they had all - including one who is a practicing physician - touched/adjusted/otherwise manipulated their masks without any hand or mask hygiene at least several times each. And even though it was supposed to be "my mask protects YOU," they'd lunge quickly for their mask and slam it on as quickly as possible if I ever ventured nearby, as if it were 1) to protect them, even though they knew the mantra of protecting you, and 2) a magical talisman that wouldn't just reduce risk, but would ward of the Very Bad Rona like garlic does to a vampire. It was beyond parody, and I couldn't believe my doctor relative (who also has a PhD in physics, no dumby), was so fooled as well. Just absurd.
