I recently read Austen's Northanger Abbey for the first time, which is largely a book about reading, and I was reminded again how transformative fiction has been to society. Imagination is the only way to connect with people different from you, and without learning and exercising the imagination muscle, and reading fiction is an incredibly cheap way to do that, everything in civil society becomes more difficult.
