I am in the middle of reading Invisible China, but as I read the analysis therein on Mexico, I am thinking about Paterson's "China, Trade and Power". Paterson argues that China's accession to the WTO brought into the global economy a massive body of cheap labor that undermined and hollowed out US manufacturing.

From Rozelle and Hell, it is clear that not only did the entry undermine US manufacturing, but it toppled NAFTA's dream of developing Mexico to the point where it would be a viable economy. Moreover, the move also upset the economic development of El Salvador and Guatemala among others that were building garment industries to supply the US.

It does not require much of a leap to see the current crisis on the southern border and tracking back to this issue.
