Thalidomide was marketed to pregnant women starting in 1957 and was removed from the European market in 1961. It probably would have been used a lot longer than that were it not for the bravery of Frances Oldham Kelsey, whom I discuss in this piece:
• “Letter to US Legislators: #DefundTheThoughtPolice” (https://margaretannaalice.substack.com/p/letter-to-us-legislators-defundthethoughtpolice)
What I was appalled to discover when I looked this up just now is that thalidomide is *still* being used (just not by parents pregnant or trying to conceive):
“It was approved in the United States in 1998 for use as a treatment for cancer. It is on the World Health Organization's List of Essential Medicines. It is available as a generic medication.” (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thalidomide)
