I also like the idea of a book club, perhaps with a monthly audio meetup on Spaces or Clubhouse, for people in the club who want to discuss the book. I read a lot of books (~100 a year) and a lot of ideas just roll around in my head, so when an author shows up on a China-related podcast or on Fresh Air, it’s thrilling and not so much because it’s the author, but more that it’s two or more people talking about something that I’ve read - or will read because of the discussion.

Clubs can get bogged down in process, but this could be simple: Bill takes input, but ultimately makes the book choice. And we go from there.
