I think there is a lot of truth in what you just said here. There are at least some valid reasons for this. One, we can not know what we do not know. We can not look for something we have reason to suspect exists ties into that. Another is education. We or at least I was taught certain things that made it incomprehensible that the US, of all countries could even conceive of anything remotely close to citizenship taxation, FBAR and FATCA. So, when I first read of theses in the newspaper I thought it must be misreported or at least over hyped and that it did not pertain to me anyway as I was and am not by any stretch of the imagination rich. The news articles I found on it all stated these features of our tax law were directed at only rich. While I did not approve of them, they did not affect me and I doubted it was as bad as reported. I was kinda right, the reality is worse.
While I do have sympathy for those just waking up, I have never bitten anyone’s head off for trying to tell of the things I was not aware of as many have to me when I tried to wake them from their slumber.
I’ve been down this road before. Earlier, it was in the FATCA/FBAR/CBT model car. Now it is in the Covid-19 car. I know the turns, hills and pot holes of this often traveled road. I know where it ends. It is not welcomed knowledge.
