I like the ISO 9000 analogy.

We can walk into almost any store, restaurant, workplace, hotel and connect to the WiFi from cell phones and tablets and laptops almost regardless of the make or model.

You don't have to join a guild or pay dues. No one enforces it. Reasonable electrical engineers basically just agreed that it made sense.
