Ethics vs. Morals - and Prof SotW, please jump in as you see fit - is the question, perhaps?
Ethics are about rules, human-imposed rules. So you have to learn them as you encounter them, as you roll through new situations. Perhaps over time, with some experience - if I were to coin a term, I might call this Wisdom - one can have grappled with Ethics for More Than a Couple or Three Rodeos that they might easily perceive what counts for Ethical Behavior in new situations. The Unwise, the group to which nearly All of Them Danged Youngins belong, have some limitations on their body of Ethical Knowledge.

Morality, is more individual. It's core to one's being. It's Your Code. Or maybe, THE Code depending upon your culture + geography + era.
