The most cynical part of my brain believes the US regime is happy to pivot to this as the current thing because the evangelical voting bloc will uniquely waive their general instincts and interests over it for eschatological reasons. More generally it cuts across the right along different lines than most other issues. Plenty of potential for infighting as well as diversion.
