I’d be interested to see more research done on the differences between atheists who grew up religious and left some reason (especially emotional ones: the church hurt me, hurt people I care about, etc) and atheists who never had those kinds of ideas inculcated into them in the first place. My hypothesis would be that the former are far more susceptible to falling in to other types of woo and that is what leads to this “god shaped hole” idea. The latter, while they may have been exposed to religious ideas, wouldn’t have had them enforced as real by authority figures. They have no “god shaped hole” and therefore are less likely to buy into other similarly structured, illogical ideas.
