Zeihan is great, but I think you really have to go back to the 1890s ish and the first Zionists. Who worked, had good relations with local Arabs, and both groups suffered under the dying Turkish Empire and Jordian landlords. I think that's a better place to start than 48 or 67.
The review has some post colonialist BS bias, but I think it only deserves a Thomas Sowell chuckle. The book is great and has an angle that loops back to your question.
