The political takeover of HK was risky and demonstrated Xi's resolve. I'm hoping a military attack on Taiwan while the US and Japan remain strong would be seen as potential suicide by Xi..it would be lower risk for Xi to wait for circumstances under which Taiwan would capitulate.
