These are really big questions..
Has China's rejuvenation campaign run its course?
- Rebuilding the global status of the Middle Kingdom has been an obsession of imperial leadership from at least the last half the Qing dynasty through today's Xi.. I wonder if Xi is doing more damage to China's global reputation than elevating it.
Can China continue to grow it's economy as the population shrinks and demands for innovation in technology increase?
- Clearly the country faces serious economic disruptions as the population ages and shrinks. How will the party build a sufficient social safety network to avoid social unrest?
IMO, innovation is really China's biggest challenge. In Chinese top down, compliant social structures, I have found it really, really difficult for companies to innovate as we know it in the West. Innovations tend to point out current operations are "wrong" and that is a serious risk for any executive to undertake. And innovations are expensive and wasteful to the current system which is hard for Chinese companies to support. So as China catches up to the technologies they copy, they are likely to lose momentum.
Will China (Xi) pursue military adventures to increase the country's wealth if the economy shrinks?
- I naively hope that China's historical aversion to foreign wars will hold true of Xi...
