As long as “AI” runs on computers, it can’t do anything that a theoretical Turing Machine can’t. No matter how sophisticated the programming, it must reduce to symbol manipulation within a formal system -- it’s all, in its final analysis, manipulation of digits in a gigantic number (the computer “memory”) according to a set of rules. The argument that more symbols and more rules would be sufficient to produce actual thought has no provable basis -- it’s an article of faith among the true believers.
