Who are you and what makes you feel you get to be so condescending towards other people? Given the forum, it might be wiser to take an attitude more open to debate that assumes people on here aren’t total ignoramuses.

The 20th century history of Taiwan is complex and has more perspectives than just that of Cold War America. Even in the 1940s, America was weighing various future options for Taiwan. It was lobbied hard by a nascent Taiwanese elite to consider a UN mandate or other options. In the end Washington decided to support Chiang Kai-shek and his claim to still represent China. That was not a foregone conclusion and it was the desire of the ROC elite that fled to Taiwan, not of the Taiwanese population itself.

Taiwan and its democracy are not necessarily about China. The current Republic of China on Taiwan state is the product of many different forces. The history of the struggle for political self-determination in Taiwan that began during the Japanese colonial period is one of them. Taiwanese independence is a goal in itself to that stream in Taiwanese politics.
