In a nutshell, because every attempt to organise/mobilise mass opposition to big business has been crushed. From the defeat of William Jennings Bryan and the arrest and imprisonment of Eugene Debbs the bosses have had it their own way. Good intentions are not worth a thing in the absence of widespread, organised, expressions of soldarity between ordinary people. The 'Left' today is a controlled opposition designed to misdirect the energies of people who seek change, the ideas/rhetoric of the 'Left' is essentially sentimental, rather than pragmatic.
