Obama suspended the Posse Comitatus Act, which from 1878 to 2012 " limited the powers of local governments and law enforcement agencies from using federal military personnel to enforce the laws of the land". Since then, it has been legal to use for the military for civilian law enforcement.

Additionally, Obama suspended due process and habeas corpus allowing indefinite suspension, including of American citizens, for 'national security':

Where were the critics 13 years ago when Obama suspended Posse Comitatus and the rights to due process and habeas corpus?

(as of August 6th, 2025 the Library of Congress had deleted sections of the Constitution including the right to habeas corpus, but claimed it was a "coding error", now corrected.)

Generally, when citizens' civil rights are abrogated for "national security" such rights never fully recover.
