Have read that humans are the only primate with "whites" around the eye's iris. This is hypothesized to be an evolutionary adaptation. It allows others to see at what, or at least in what direction, an individual is looking. Similarly, a large part of the brain evolved to discern the mental state of the other party. Why? Clearly much rides on whether others are likely friend or foe. It's a survival advantage.
