Yes, "studies" show that girls and women are more likely than boys and men to report depression. But here are three reasons for interpreting those stats cautiously. (1) These stats rely primarily on verbal cues, but girls and women are generally more verbal than boys and men are. (2) The words that girls and women choose to describe depression are different from those of boys and men--but also from social scientists who interview them. (3) The stats on suicide, surely the ultimate indicator of depression, show that far more boys and men resort to it than girls and women. Even though more girls and women attempt suicide, they usually do so in ways that are actually calls for help. Boys and men usually mean business and therefore succeed in killing themselves.
