Hi Sarah, the entire verse of Romans 8:28 is very powerful and I lean on it often and read it while putting emphasis on each phrase. It is also often misunderstood. In full, it reads (in the 1984 printing of the NIV):
"And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose."
That does NOT mean that everything that happens is good; not by a long shot because many things happen that are not good. It does mean that God will use anything and everything that happens to glorify His name and to the ultimate benefit of those who love him and have been called to serve Him.
These are dark events, but I feel honored to live at a time when we can watch God's prophesies being fulfilled. We need the peace that comes from knowing God. Philippians 4:6,7 also helps me though I need more practice. Live out the first sentence and you've just got to love the second sentence "... and the peace of God, ..."!
"Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." [NIV 1984]
