Far too simplistic an explanation. It is unquestionable that Putin has imperialistic ambitions and has acted on them through illegal, unprovoked wars for almost two decades at this point. NATO’s responses and the anxiety of neighboring countries in the east (whether NATO members or not) are completely rational responses to Putin’s foreign policy.
