The fact is that although both the US and the Soviet Union were ruled by sociopaths, they were able to moderate their sociopathy to cut some kind of deal in 1962 that allowed their ruling classes to keep ruling relatively prosperous states instead of smoking post-nuclear junk heaps. Someone got to Kennedy and company, and Khrushchev and company, and pointed out that whereas a showdown might be fun in a card game, in the real world everybody loses and loses big time.
