On the one hand, we have done a lot of things wrong since discarding Washington's advice to refrain from entangling alliances etc. On the other, we have pulled Europe's ass from the fire at least twice. The notion that the world, particularly if defined as effete Europeans, is looking on in horror at us finally taking a stand against these nations living off our people, bothers me not in the least.
