I have been involved in a study of contempt for about a month now. It is fascinating but is also very deep. The connection of contempt and vengeance with the philosophy of law and the philosophy of psychology is particularly fascinating. One of my discoveries was that the expression “psychology of contempt” had only about 400 hits on Google Scholar, about 90% of them occurring from 2015. I see toxic forms of contempt as one of the main obstacles to civil discourse.
