Popularity of Latin goes through ups and downs---I began to teach, 1974, when it was at its nadir. Retired to make babies. During that time --unknown to me--Latin regained its due respect, and schools were hunting for teachers. I returned to teaching 2000 at the end-ish of that period. Latin popularity is on a downhill slide again--but here is the irony: at the same time that popular opinion regards it as an unimportant study, there is an absolutely huge increase in people trying to use it--or its English 'children' (both usage and words)-- in their writing, and totally botching the job. Of course, when secondary schools ditch it from their curriculum, college students don't choose it as a major; so when the cycle turns, there is a paucity of available teachers.
