Their choice is based on morality. They think that they, the Anointed, are morally superior to us, the benighted. So, they do not see problems as such, and if they do, the problems are always explained away as someone or something else's fault. It is imperative, above all else, that they must maintain belief in their own superiority. Evidence to the contrary does not fit that model and will be ignored.
