A couple of decades ago, when the stories about how cars' gas tanks were exploding and it came out the problem had been, ahem, exaggerated, I commented to a coworker that the network had, perhaps, rigged some cars to support the story. He said, "They wouldn't do that. That would mean they LIED to us. They would never LIE to us!" We need trusting people, but at the same time....
