China has approved few Hollywood titles for release over the past year, yet the market accounted for 34% of the worldwide Boxoffice market. Of the few that did get in, both Dune and Bond have performed poorly. IMO, among the reasons for this include: 1) Hollywood, like many American industries, helped to create world-class local competition that now dominates the market, 2) the CCP views Hollywood as propaganda for the west, so why let it in if it's no longer needed to fill theater seats, and 3) a rise in nationalism has caused disinterest or even dislike among Chinese consumers for Hollywood content......... Curious what other think, and whether, like me, Hollywood needs to view the "writing on the wall", refocusing efforts on other markets and rapidly developing platforms for alternative monetization.
