As I'm reading Jenn's and other posters' comments about Romney, I keep thinking about what Tim Miller had to say about him in his recent book. He calls out Romney as the most blatant of the "charlatans straight-out lying about their views on immigration to gain an advantage" in his political campaign. "Romney had flip-flopped on the other salient social issues of the moment--abortion, gay rights, guns--so it seemed certain that his border hawkishness was merely a confidence game..." This from an insider with first-hand experience of the way politics works. And Tim doesn't single out Romney as the only one who does/did this; it seemed to be the way the "game" had to be played to win.
Given this context, I also have a little different view of Romney being the only Repub who voted to convict Trump in the Ukraine bribery impeachment. I thought it weird that he seemed to be sweating-bullets-nervous ,to put it mildly, when he gave his speech about why he was doing that. Given his former actions to do or say whatever he thought would get him elected no matter what he knew was true or right, I guess this really did take a lot of courage and showed backbone.
